CHAPTER 12
THE TWO-WEEK HIATUS FROM TAPING THE CAPTAIN AND TENNILLE Show couldn’t have come soon enough. Even though I enjoyed the process, I was completely drained from the incredible amount of energy it took to get the show done every week. Just as wearing to me was trying to rally Daryl enough so he could get through the week himself. I was constantly trying to coax him through the busy week of preparation before we taped an episode, making sure he was emotionally supported enough to do his responsibilities, and frantically working on my own. I also worried about Daryl’s behavior during the taping of the show. I prayed that he would make it through without an incident, while at the same time I tried to project a happy, confident face to the camera. But no amount of coaxing and flattering made a difference to Daryl’s dislike of having to perform on our show. It didn’t matter that the show was a hit. It didn’t matter that Daryl’s aloof personality, in sharp contrast to mine, had the unintended effect of making people hang on the edge of their seats for the few words he’d actually speak. It didn’t matter that, despite his own determination not to play along, Daryl inadvertently created a distinct, if cryptic, television persona that fascinated our fans for years to come.
Something else drastically changed our lives when The Captain and Tennille Show aired. Our music first gave Captain and Tennille recognition, but our TV show propelled us to a new level of visual, all-encompassing fame. It’s hard to imagine such a thing now in a world of seemingly unlimited entertainment choices and the instant connection through social media, but in 1976 there were only a few ways that people had access to their favorite stars: mainly radio, movies, and television. When our show premiered, there were only three major networks available on American television: ABC, NBC, and CBS. The Captain and Tennille Show was broadcast into over thirty-three million homes every week. As a result, Daryl and I became instantly recognizable.
This wasn’t as much of a concern for Daryl, who preferred to stay at home when he wasn’t cloistered away in the studio, but the invasion of privacy came as a complete shock to me. Before the TV show, even when Captain and Tennille had many hits on the radio, my life was still relatively “normal,” and I could go out in public with only the occasional fan recognizing me either from our album covers or guest appearances on talk shows such as The Dick Clark Show and The Tonight Show. When you are a five-feet-eleven-inches-tall woman with a rather distinctive speaking voice, it’s hard not to stand out in any situation. But when I began appearing weekly on TV, people immediately noticed me everywhere I went.
One of my favorite ways to unwind has always been to spend an afternoon shopping, all by myself. When the weather was good, as it so often is in southern
